File-Sharing: Creative Destruction or just Plain Destruction?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The ‘sharing’ of sound recordings over the Internet is the newest controversy in a long running battle between copyright owners and copying technologies. In order to provide some context, perspective and background, this paper examines the short history of file-sharing, the longer history of record sales, various explanations for the change in record sales and some analysis of the economics of copying. Although file-sharing has been imperfectly and inconsistently measured, it nevertheless appears to reveal a fairly close linkage between changes in file-sharing and changes in record sales. Explanations, other than file-sharing, for the recent decline in record sales seem to have little or no support. Because economic theories of the impacts of copying hold out little hope for a benign impact of file-sharing, these results should not be surprising. These findings reinforce the econometric results from most of an expanding literature. *I would like to thank Steve Margolis, seminar participants at the University of Montreal, and for financial support, the Center for the Analysis of Property Rights and Innovation.

Leapfrogging innovation competition through the process of creative destruction encourages the innovation in product and process that lengthens and improves lives. Schumpeter’s process of creative destruction emphasizes dynamic innovation competition, as contrasted with the standard model of static price competition. The ‘big-is-better’ account of creative destruction claimed, in addition, that...

The Internet Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical name space that enables the assignment of unique, mnemonic identifiers to Internet hosts and the consistent mapping of these names to IP addresses. The root of the domain name system is the top of the hierarchy and is currently managed by a quasi-private centralized regulatory authority, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numb...

متن کاملCreative Destruction and Subjective Well-Being.
In this paper we analyze the relationship between turnover-driven growth and subjective wellbeing. Our model of innovation-led growth and unemployment predicts that: (i) the effect of creative destruction on expected individual welfare should be unambiguously positive if we control for unemployment, less so if we do not; (ii) job creation has a positive and job destruction has a negative impact...
متن کاملCreative Destruction and the Valuation of Incumbents
I study empirically the causal effects of creative destruction on incumbent firms. Due to concerns about omitted variables, I exploit characteristics of venture capital industry to derive an instrument for startup activity in an industry; I find that industry-level activity is strongly correlated with public market returns of firms funded by venture capital firms in the industry. I then find th...
